While the concept of a "skincare detox" is frequently promoted online, is it truly necessary? The term "detoxification" generally refers to the body's process of eliminating toxins. When applied to skin, it loosely translates to a deep cleansing approach aimed at preventing adverse effects.

Skin Irritation: A Common Problem

Skin irritation can arise from using inappropriate skincare products or frequently switching between products without giving your skin time to adapt. Common signs include breakouts, bumps, redness, itchiness, and even a burning sensation.

Addressing Skin Irritation: Detox or Not?

So, what's the recommended course of action when irritation strikes? Some online influencers advocate for a complete skincare detox, suggesting the cessation of all skin care products for a period. However, dermatologist Dr. Vidyani Adiningtyas advises a more nuanced approach.

"Skin irritation often occurs due to using high-concentration serums like vitamin C that may not be suitable for your skin type," she explains. "First, assess the severity of the irritation. If it's severe, consult a dermatologist immediately for further treatment, such as topical medications or professional care."

For mild irritation, Dr. Adiningtyas advises against extreme detoxes. Instead, she recommends avoiding products containing active ingredients, particularly high-concentration vitamin C serums. "Simply discontinue using the product that triggered the irritation and use basic skincare as minimally as possible," Dr. Adiningtyas advises. "Your skin still needs cleansing and protection, particularly if you wear makeup or spend time in air-conditioned environments. Don't jump into a detox right away. Observe your skin's condition and adjust your routine based on its needs."

Alongside basic skincare like cleansers, moisturizers, and sunscreen, prioritize a healthy lifestyle. Avoid wearing makeup and exposure to sunlight while your skin is irritated. Remember, your skin is a unique organ and needs the right care. If you experience skin irritation, consult a dermatologist for safe and effective treatment.
